She’s been criticized for how she looks and now she’s being criticized for...donating books?
The First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) Melania Trump has been the subject of hysterical and irrational anger since the moment her husband announced he was running for President.
From the so-called fashion world refusing to style her (Melania didn’t need them anyway), to her son Barron being mocked, to insults about the shoes she wears, poking fun at her accent, numerous articles about how she’s miserable as First Lady and not to mention the daily bombardment of backlash she endures from simply being married to President Donald Trump — this FLOTUS has put up with enough crap.
But the most recent controversy is without a doubt, the stupidest.
FLOTUS donated a number Dr. Seuss books to an elementary school in Cambridge, Massachusetts as part of an initiative to promote National Read a Book Day. She included one of her favourite Seuss books — Oh, the Places You’ll Go! — which she read with her son Barron “over and over again” when he was growing up.
This all seems harmless enough.
Not so for one social justice warrior librarian.
Liz Phipps Soeiro took it upon herself to reject the First Lady’s donation with an ungrateful rant on a blog that would have even made Karl Marx blush.
Soeiro spewed this out: “So, my school doesn’t have a NEED for these books. And then there’s the matter of the books themselves. You may not be aware of this, but Dr. Seuss is a bit of a cliché, a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature.”
The librarian also added that apparently Dr. Seuss’ work is “racist”.
“Dr. Seuss’s illustrations are steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes,” she claimed.
The Cat in the Hat. Racist.
One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. All racists.
Green Eggs and Ham. Obviously racist.
Melania Trump donating these books? The biggest racist!
If you haven’t buried your face in your hands yet shaking your head in disbelief, the next twist will surely have you weeping for the future of humanity — or at least anyone who encounters Soeiro.
Apparently the activist librarian didn’t always have these views about Dr. Seuss. In fact she was such a fan girl, in a 2015 tweet, it appears Soeiro dressed up as “The Cat in the Hat” in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
As Becket Adams aptly noted in the Washington Examiner: “Huh. Happily dressed as a character created by an author whose work is supposedly ‘steeped in racist propaganda.’ Imagine that.”
The Examiner reached out to Soeiro’s employer, Cambridgeport Elementary School, for confirmation it was indeed her, but they didn’t respond.
It is worth noting that every FLOTUS since Barbara Bush has either read or promoted Dr. Seuss books to American children.
It wasn’t racist when Hillary Clinton read the books — or Laura Bush, or even Michelle Obama.
Yet somehow when it’s Melania Trump, suddenly it is?
This once again illustrates just how far Trump Derangement Syndrome has gone.
The accomplished FLOTUS, who speaks six languages, is a proud American who shouldn’t be insulted because she’s married to one of then most difficult and controversial men in the world.
She wants to use her platform for a good cause, yet there are far too many that are quick to excoriate her for it.
Perhaps it’s time for Soeiro to put her own anger aside, pick up a Dr. Seuss book and heed his wise words:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
